Armed groups allied against the Ethiopian government continue to gain territory and make their way towards the capital of Addis Ababa. Washington has taken notice and deployed Army Rangers from the 1st Battalion to neighboring Djibouti, standing ready to aid the US Embassy if necessary.
Three warships have also been positioned in the region, but the State Department warns there aren’t plans for a large-scale evacuation. The State Department issued an order to leave the country in early November when the armed conflict began.
Commercial airports are still operating and officials are urging civilians to take advantage of them while they still can.
