Guadeloupe, a French territory, experienced the third night of riots and violence on Sunday, due to protests over COVID-19 regulations, with assailants firing at police officers and firefighters, according to officials. As businesses were smashed into and automobiles were set on fire, cops apprehended 38 people.

On Sunday, special police forces from mainland France were due to come to the Caribbean island to maintain peace. In an indication that turmoil could extend to other Caribbean overseas territories, trade unions on the island of Martinique have called for a general strike to begin on Monday, according to French media. The strike notice requests an end to healthcare workers’ forced vaccinations, as well as assistance in dealing with high fuel expenses.
