Vets Group Calls VA Program to Target Toxic Exposure from Burn Pits ‘Wonky Doublespeak | Air Force Magazine

Must Read

The White House has urged the Department of Veterans Affairs to assist veterans exposed to burn pits and other in-service hazardous dangers in receiving the care they require, but a key veterans group calls the initiative “wonky doublespeak that accomplishes or changes nothing.”

Thousands of service members were exposed to carcinogens during the United States’ two-decade involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq, resulting in illnesses that formed years after service separation, bringing the veterans unsuitable for treatment if they cannot verify their illnesses are caused by their service.

Numerous bills have failed despite high-profile efforts by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and comedian Jon Stewart, who helped enact similar legislation for 9/11 first responders. Now, through a pilot program and “exposure model,” the VA is attempting a different approach.
