Submarines and special forces from the Royal Navy are rushing to recover a British fighter plane that went down in the Mediterranean Sea before the Russians can get to it.
On Wednesday morning, a £100 million RAF F-35 from the UK’s flagship aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth failed during a routine procedure. The jet, one of the most advanced in the world, plummeted to the Mediterranean’s depths and was wrecked immediately. The plane was discovered on Wednesday afternoon, with an Anglo-US security force patrolling the region of the seabed until the plane was properly recovered.
A British pilot, who has not been identified, was forced to eject but was rescued by a Merlin search and rescue helicopter and is now safe aboard the aircraft carrier.
