Inside Wagnergate: Ukraine’s Brazen Sting Operation to Snare Russian Mercenaries | Bellingcat

Must Read

Belarusian official media said on July 29, 2020, that the nation’s security forces had detained 33 fighters from the Wagner private military contractor. According to the allegation, these men were part of a cell of more than 200 fighters in Belarus attempting to topple the government ahead of the nation’s presidential elections in early August. Despite Belarus’ initial accusation of Russian intervention in the August election, the two nations seemed to settle with the restoration of the mercenaries to Russia and increased military and commercial ties.  The presence of the Russian mercenaries was later shown to have nothing to do with the Belarusian elections or Russian intervention but rather was part of a Ukrainian entrapment effort that was cut short.
