A peculiar exercise was conducted this weekend on the largest Swedish island, Gotland, involving an USAFSOC MC-130J Commando II and several Swedish Air Force aircraft. The MC-130J was escorted by a Swedish C-130H (TP-84) and two JAS 39 Gripen Jets to a highway which was being improvised as a landing strip. On board the MC-130 was a M142 HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) vehicle which was driven out of the cargo bay and onto the Swedish transport plane. Although Sweden is not a part of the NATO alliance they regularly conduct training missions with the West and have a history of fortifying their American alliance in the face of Russian aggression.
