In use since 1988, the bolt-action M24 Sniper Weapon System is popular throughout the U.S. Army. It is based on the Remington M700 and revered for its dependable accuracy. However, the 800-meter effective range is simply not getting the job done anymore. This was realized over the last decade and snipers in Afghanistan were using the semi-automatic M110 before the end of the war. Most special operators preferred the M110 and the Army conducted a competition between manufacturers which the M110 won.
