The Army intends to select replacements for mainstays, the M4, M16, and the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon by mid-2022. The desired caliber was the subject of contentious debate but ultimately it was decided the future weapon will fire 6.8mm rounds. The Army is currently dealing with the proposals of three companies: Sig Sauer, General Dynamics and Textron Systems. The winning company would be contracted to produce roughly 120,000 rifles and machine guns over 8 years.
