Pentagon Warns Against Deal Bringing Russian Mercenaries to Mali | VoA

Adding to the chorus of voices advising Mali’s interim government against brokering any contract to hire assassins from Russia’s Wagner Group to aid with safety and terrorism are US military officials. For weeks, US and French officials have openly tried to persuade Malian leaders not to go ahead with a rumored contract in which Wagner would be paid $10.8 million per month for 1,000 mercenaries to train Mali’s troops and provide security for senior officials. The Pentagon now claims that such an agreement would be costly to Mali in several strategic capacities.
