The US-backed Afghan soldiers known as Zero units were the shadows of the Afghan battlefield until the Taliban seized command of Kabul in August. They were respected fighters and in recent years, largely undetectable, along with their CIA aides. Fighters from a Zero unit known as 01 and other connected militias named collectively as National Strike Units, or NSUs, helped the Americans secure Hamid Karzai International Airport in the frenetic, violent weeks between the Taliban win and the US troop pullout.
