Senior U.S. officials are warning Mail’s interim government against the contracting of the Russian mercenary company, the Wagner Group. The deal would apparently pay Wagner $10.8m per month to provide training for Mali’s military and protection for senior officials. American, French and other European officials have argued that the move would only increase instability and that Mali would be better served by focusing on the upcoming election. While US AFRICOM has been working with a number of countries in west Africa and the Sahel, assistance to Mali has been limited since the coup that saw the old regime ousted this past May.
