‘Psychedelics renaissance’: new wave of research puts hallucinogenics forward to treat mental health | The Guardian

There exists a new wave of research aimed at proving the psychological benefits of psychedelic substances. Therapeutic uses for MDMA, DMT, and psilocybin are being explored in clinical trials across the world. Psychedelic drugs like DMT, LSD, mescaline, and psilocybin work by binding to the brain’s specific serotonin receptors. Psychedelics are thought to lessen the “default mode network”, a system of interconnected brain regions that is active during unfocused, wakeful, rest such as daydreaming. The region is believed to be important in formulating our sense of self and can become too rigid when people experience anxiety and depression.
