Amphibious aircraft: Air Force is developing floating C-130s | Northwest Florida Daily News

Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) is planning on making the venerable C-130 even more versatile with the addition of pontoons to give the plane amphibious capabilities. Working in partnership with the Air Force Research Laboratory, AFSOC is developing a modification for the transport plane that would allow the craft to land and take off on water. In their announcement of the new amphibious capabilities program, there was mention of the U.S.’s renewed focus on regions with sea and lake shores. The effort to add amphibious capabilities is being aided using digital design programs that intend to fast-track completion of the configuration in the next 17 months.
