The Joint Special Operations Command is our country’s national mission force. They are trained to respond to the most tactically challenging of scenarios. In the months preceding 9/11, several combat-experienced senior members of Delta Force retired or shifted to another agency or the private sector, leaving the elite group without the numbers it needed. A recruitment effort to bring them back on the team largely failed. Despite this, the Pentagon successfully argued for the use of small special operations to engage the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. Operations Gecko and Rhino saw Delta Force on the ground in Afghanistan months after the attack on 9/11.
