4 Marine Raiders will receive bronze stars for their heroic action in March of last year when they were responsible for clearing out cave systems in northern Iraq of ISIS combatants. The Raiders were working with Iraqi security forces moving through the hills on what was described as a “warm sunny day” when the sounds of gunfire and explosions echoed through the valley. Two Marines and one French special operator were killed in the initial exchange. Refusing to leave their comrades behind, the unit including the eventual Bronze Star recipients cleared multiple enemy caves on their way to rescue other wounded soldiers. See how they describe the tale here.
