During the New America Future Security Forum, the director of strategy, plans, and policy for US Special Operations Command Central said that special operations forces need a new branding focus. Army Lt. Col Katie Crombe said past marketing campaigns that focused on forward action and tactical gear helped to recruit what was needed at the time but a change is needed. The focus might shift towards the civil affairs and psychological operations aspects of SOCOM, “hearts and minds” as its known. Although combat deployments and experience has been the predominant measure of effort for promotion consideration, other forms of education may be considered in the future.
