There has been plenty of commentary in recent weeks over supposed wasted efforts in Afghanistan, but it is important to remember the sacrifices were not without cause. Former US Central Command commander Joseph Votel is wise to the fact that the Afghan conflict concluded differently than many hoped, but he reminds us that nothing can diminish the selflessness that serving your country entails. The anniversary of 9/11 will certainly provoke new analysis and reflexive critiques, but words cannot alter the past experiences of soldiers who left their homes and families in pursuit of a safer world for them.
