Airborne, special operations forces from Fort Bragg played crucial role in 9/11 response | The Fayetteville Observer

Must Read

Military families continue to feel the effects of 9/11, like the families of the victims, harder than the rest of the country. Troops originating from Fort Bragg have played a disproportionately heavy role in the ensuing 20 years of fighting. In the immediate aftermath, special operations forces from Ft. Bragg were critically involved in Operation Enduring Freedom. Ft. Bragg paratroopers deployed within 9 months of the attack. Units from the post would deploy continuously to Afghanistan and eventually Iraq in the years to come. In mid-August, paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division are among those called upon to aid the withdrawal of American allies in Afghanistan. On Aug. 26th Staff Sgt. Ryan Knauss of Ft. Bragg’s 1st Special Forces Command is among those killed by the suicide bombing at Hamid Karzai airport.
