Authoritarian regimes have tried to misuse their American prisoners of war in the past for propaganda purposes. Despite the fact that such activities were clearly in violation of the Geneva Conventions, these attempts frequently took the form of video and audio recordings as well as photographs of the POWs. Advanced digital capabilities, such as deepfakes, provide potential adversaries a substantial new tool in future battles. In future battles, the US military must prepare for the possibility of these new technologies being utilized against POWs. Deepfake is a video and audio manipulation method that makes it appear as if a person says or does something they never said or did.
