Among veterans, there is an implicit caste system. People who are born into these castes have no say in which category they are assigned to. It’s all down to chance and geopolitics. Either you went to war, or you didn’t go to war. In a family of soldiers, it can be difficult to be the sole veteran who has never served in a war. It can be difficult to relate to those who have been there. But, more importantly, not going to war allows military men to visit their families, work in a great job, and see what war has to bring.
