Afghan General Sami Sadat is urging residents of Lashkar Gah, Afghanistan’s southern provincial capital, to leave the area as soon as possible in wake of the Taliban’s continued attack on the city. Lashkar Gar is one of Afghanistan’s three provincial capitals under current Taliban attack. An Afghan capital has not been captured by the Taliban since 2016 when they briefly held Kunduz. As Afghan troops struggle to repel the Taliban across the country, President Ashraf Ghani has blamed the insurgents’ brazenness on the sudden withdrawal of U.S. forces and contends their success will embolden similar aggression around the world.
