82nd Airborne, 3rd SF troops test new parachutist life preserver at Ft. Bragg | US Army

Although most military planners try to avoid involving water in airborne operations, paratroopers can sometimes take advantage of a body of water to access targets more easily. The Army’s new Parachutist Flotation Device (PFD), which just completed its final tests, is a lifesaving device designed to keep jumpers upright in the event they cannot themselves. Using an internal carbon dioxide gas cylinder or a manual oral inflation tube, two flotation bladders inflate suspending the soldier upright.
