The new Columbia-class submarines, the replacements to the Cold War-era Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines, have gotten a lot of attention, and rightly so. They’ll be one of the most manageable parts of the US nuclear triad once in operation, able to lay in secret, submerged and unnoticed, prepared to unleash nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles nearly anywhere. Because of their lengthy patrol and nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile capacity, the Ohios are known as the Navy’s “boomers.”
