Iran’s tricky balancing act in Afghanistan | War On the Rocks

While the US pulls the last of its remaining troops out of Afghanistan and the Taliban sweeps across the country, Iran has been forced to court unlikely allies. Iranian official Esmail Qaani traveled in late June to the Syrian border to visit the Fatemiyoun Division, an Iran-backed proxy force of Afghans from the Shiite Hazara community. The Fatemiyoun would prove to be a useful ally if another major conflict were to break Iran is primarily trying to avoid just that. Iran must balance its ties to Afghanistan’s Hazara community who they have long championed with any Taliban involvement as they actively target Shiites.
