After delays, the Navy takes delivery of first improved nuclear warhead | Military.com

Must Read

According to a statement made Tuesday, the first new nuclear warhead expected to enhance the Navy’s Trident II D5 Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile has begun rolling off the manufacturing process. The statement is more than a year late, after setbacks and enormous cost overruns caused by troubles with a minor component. The W88 Alt 370 warhead is a modernized version of the original W88 warhead, which has been in operation since late 1988. The venture spans “more than 11 years of design, development, qualification, and component production,” according to the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration.
