Macron announces France’s Sahel military force will end in early 2022 | France 24

Macron confirmed last week a significant decrease in France’s military presence in the Sahel, as well as the end of the current Barkhane operation. Macron stated that France’s future participation in the Sahel would be part of a so-called Takuba international task force, with dozens of French soldiers serving as the “backbone.” It would entail the shutdown of French facilities and the deployment of special forces dedicated to counter-terrorism and military training. The dry and dangerous Sahel area, which runs across Africa south of the Sahara Desert and includes half a dozen countries, now has 5,100 French troops stationed there.
