Deployment of US troops along US-Mexico border will stretch into a fourth year, Pentagon announces | Stars and Stripes

According to Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin granted a petition to lengthen the operation that helps the Department of Homeland Security across the southwest border. According to a military source who declined to be identified, Austin approved the proposal on June 23. According to Kirby, Austin has permitted up to 3,000 soldiers to deploy on the operation, down from the 4,000 troops planned to serve on the southwest border in fiscal 2021. According to the defense official, missions will continue to be filled mostly by National Guard personnel serving in a federal capacity under the authority and control of US Northern Command.
