According to newly revealed records of his Silver Star medal, an Army Green Beret was essential in retaking a key al-Shabab stronghold during a horrific battle six years ago. In July 2015, the Somali army, backed by Kenyan forces, retook the region of Baardheere west of Mogadishu, claiming little opposition. However, US Army records describe a horrific encounter against a “prepared, committed, and numerically superior opponent” and offer a rare view into ground combat involving US troops in Somalia. Capt. William Doyle of the Colorado-based 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) certainly saved the lives of eight [US special operations forces] and led in the freedom of Baardheere.
