President Joe Biden will meet with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and the leader of the High Council for National Reconciliation, Abdullah Abdullah, at the White House on Friday. As the military withdrawal progresses, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the summit “will emphasize the continuing cooperation between the United States and Afghanistan.” She reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to “help the Afghan people, particularly Afghan women, children, and minorities,” as well as “guarantee the country never again becomes a safe haven for terrorist groups posing a threat to the United States.” Biden’s staff may try to create an image of order and positivity in the run-up to America’s exit from Afghanistan, but it will fall flat.
