The 160th SOAR MH-47 Chinooks are highly powerful helicopters with various alterations around their airframes, some of which are more puzzling than others. The US Department of Defense recently published photos of 160th SOAR MH-47s, revealing a little-known element of the US Army’s heavily adapted Chinooks: pipelines for securely discharging fuel in flight. The pipes can be seen emerging from the back of the massive sponsons added on each side of the MH-47’s fuselage, which is larger than the ones on conventional Chinooks and holds more fuel within Nomex honeycomb cells.
