Rank-and-file soldiers begin Special Forces-style security missions across Indo-Pacific | Stars & Stripes

Must Read

Small groups of soldiers are being deployed all across the Indo-Pacific on tasks similar to those carried out by Special Forces. The soldiers are part of the 5th Security Force Assistance Brigade, which is based at Joint Base Fort Lewis-McChord in Washington and has already deployed to India, Thailand, the Maldives, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines. According to brigade spokesman Maj. Willian Leasure, the unit was established in May 2020 as part of a military strategy that asks for a shift away from counterterrorism campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. The brigade’s role, which entails fortifying ties and identifying new military allies, is considered critical to the strategic competition.
