The Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division’s plans to develop a workable concept of a human vehicle capable of both airborne and underwater travel are detailed in a 2010 Navy research document. The craft was designed to ferry Special Forces units into and out of combat zones in a stealthy manner. This isn’t the first research of its kind to suggest a “transmedium” vehicle, which is described as a vehicle that can operate in various domains. Although it’s unclear how far the Navy’s studies went, the document’s findings are important since they demonstrate that a Naval study found over a decade ago that a “functioning design is conceivable within the existing state of the art.”
