In the history of special operations, the 1990s have a unique place. Some even believed special operations were no longer essential after the Cold War ended and before the War on Terror began. However, due to a lack of a proper war to fight, certain special ops troops were engaged in the Central and South American drug war. On American soil, a few Special Forces troops even participated in anti-narcotics operations. These operations were carried out by Joint Task Force 6, which was created in 1989 and has since been renamed Joint Task Force North.
