Although the effects of these primarily unverified cyberattacks — Russia and China are suspected — vary, individual persons have begun to experience the strain in their everyday lives, as seen by the fuel crisis following the cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline. In view of these cyberattacks, the US government is considering a more extreme stance, with ransomware cases receiving the same level of scrutiny as terrorist investigations. Similarly, NATO’s secretary-general stated that a cyberattack against a member might activate Article 5, the alliance’s collective defense clause.
