The Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) has sought $60 million for Project Pele, which aims to construct a new, portable nuclear microreactor that will deliver high-output, reliable electricity for a range of DOD purposes. In the coming fiscal year, the Department of Defense expects to start developing a sample reactor design that will produce one to five megawatts of electricity and run at peak capacity for at least three years. The Pentagon’s budget proposal for the fiscal year 2022, which was revealed on May 28, 2021, includes a request for money for Project Pele.
