Rare awards show Nigerien valor in 2017 ambush of Army Green Berets | Army Times

Must Read

During the tragic incident at the Niger-Mali border on Oct. 4, 2017, four Nigerien soldiers joined a solitary Army Green Beret in a “bold flanking maneuver” against Islamic attackers, giving their colleagues and US peers ample time to retreat. With this, six Nigerians were awarded US medals for combat actions and valor, including two murdered in an ambush by a group double their number. Officials discovered only one other incidence of foreign partners earning valor awards in Military personnel records dating back to the 1991 Gulf War. The medals were bestowed in October 2019, and Army Times quickly sought them, but they were not released until May after a Freedom of Information Act request.
