A band of Irish nationalists entered Canada from the United States 150 years ago. Hundreds of Americans fired round after round of massive fire from their muzzleloading rifle-muskets under a scorching early June sun. This unlikely war scene may seem like a plot from an “alternative history” computer game or a “time-travel” science-fiction novel for many Americans as well as most Canadians. Nevertheless, this war occurred more than 150 years ago, and it is the physical expression of the cause for Canada’s independence in 1867.
