Fort Stewart to Honor Iraq War Hero Alwyn Cashe as Medal of Honor Remains in Limbo | Military.com

The ceremony field of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division will be renamed after Iraq War hero Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe, whose Medal of Honor candidacy is still pending. On Thursday, the department declared that the Marne Garden outside its headquarters in Fort Stewart, Georgia, would be renamed the Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe Garden. Cashe was injured when he rescued six soldiers and a translator from a blazing Bradley Fighting Vehicle near Samarra, Iraq, in 2005. Attempts to upgrade Cashe’s Silver Star to a Medal of Honor have been blocked in the past due to procedural issues.
