The Marine Corps is undergoing a major period of innovation and restructuring, with the aim of keeping up with China’s “pacing challenge” and eventually winning a war if one arises. According to the commandant, he has spent the last several years researching China as it pursued more hostile foreign policy objectives. The Marines in that “very forward” expeditionary force would most likely prevent China from being as regionally destructive as it would be if the US military were not watching.
