Russia’s ‘eighth wonder of the world.’ | BBC Travel

Must Read

The Amber Room, a collection of panels carved from six tons of amber placed on gold-leaf walls and decorated with mosaics and mirrors, was originally constructed in the early 18th century as a lavish 16sq m showpiece room for Frederick I, King of Prussia. The chamber was lost in the German wars and later rebuilt in a St. Petersburg palace, but it remains a mystery as enthralling as amber itself. The recreated Amber Room is now on display at Catherine Palace in the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum and Heritage Site in St Petersburg, after a 23-year restoration.
