Internal study highlights struggle over control of America’s special ops forces | Politico

A series of controversies have shaken America’s special operations forces in recent years, including drug trafficking, murder, and inquiries into war crimes. Top civilian Pentagon officials moved to assert greater influence over America’s most elite military units as the cultural unrest erupted. With this, the Joint Special Operations University, the academic arm of the United States Special Operations Command, has been conducting research to help deter further attempts to expand civilian control of the community. According to Mark Mitchell, formerly the top acting civilian overseeing special operations forces in the Pentagon during the last administration, there are problems in the culture, and the top civilian position needs to be empowered on a variety of fronts.
