As the years go by, the capabilities and skills that make Special Forces unique within the special operations enterprise have been de-prioritized. The Special Forces have slowly lost their language skills and deep cultural understanding as the US government has focused more on direct action counterterrorism. In order to be able for them to effectively compete with today’s great-power competitors, the Special Forces should support and sustain armed resistance in occupied and contested countries. This way, they’ll be able to operate on this “new” old battleground.
