Throughout its history Air Force Special Operations Command has been through two major changes. Now, it could have its third major change as the country is withdrawing from Afghanistan, and less focus is given on constant counter-violent extremism operations. Specifically, the third major change of AFSOC is crucial in order to stay relevant in a potential conflict with a near-peer adversary, AFSOC Commander Lt. Gen. James C. “Jim” Slife stated. “We must transform ourselves from the AFSOC our nation has needed for the last 20 years into the AFSOC our nation will need in the future operating environment.”
