Rep. Elaine Luria, D-Norfolk, has introduced legislation this week to secure Veterans Administration disability and health care benefits. The legislation was made after she found out that many veterans who were exposed to toxic burn pits in the Middle East and the Philippines are not getting VA benefits. The legislation was the first of its kind to include a comprehensive list of overseas locations that would qualify a veteran for benefits alongside a list of presumptive illnesses contracted as a result of airborne exposure to toxic substances. More than 13,900 veterans have been claiming VA benefits, but roughly 4,000 of them were only given.
