In an exclusive interview with Victoria Davey, an epidemiologist and associate chief research officer at the V.A., it was revealed that V.A. expected all along that the Iraq and Afghanistan wars would lead to toxic exposures. According to her, disease researchers at the Department of Veterans Affairs immediately started internal discussions on how to prepare for the war-related illnesses they knew would follow right after the 9/11 attacks. This revelation has angered veterans who have been convincing the agency for years that their illnesses were linked to their service overseas.
