In a statement by Army Gen. Richard D. Clarke, head of Special Operations Command, to the Senate, U.S. special operations forces need a new armed overwatch solution to fully support all its missions. Specifically, SOCOM is seeking 75 new armed intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance aircraft to replace the Air Force’s U-28 Draco. The new aircraft should be able to deploy to remote areas and provide both ISR and attack capabilities to special operators at the same time. This was not funded in the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, but the command wants to have a demonstration this year.
