How rice shaped the American South | BBC Travel

America isn’t the original home of rice planters and plantation owners did not know how to grow it. Between 1750 and 1775 enslaved Africans brought rice over to the US and introduced cultivation. They became the pioneers of growing rice in the US, helping to shape the cuisine and culture of the American South. This also encouraged growth of numerous ports in the South such as Charleston and Savannah.
