According to Air Force Special Operations Command Lt. Gen. James C. “Jim” Slife, drones can possibly contend for U.S. Special Operations Command’s armed overwatch platform competition. However, he also stated that the MQ-9 Reaper drone might not yet be ready for it with its current form. This is because of the ground infrastructure its operations demand and the “runway length” it requires. The armed overwatch demonstration doesn’t have a definite date yet, but it is expected to happen this fiscal year.
