Why would Russia’s Kalashnikov make a NATO-friendly assault rifle? | Defense News

In an arms trade show held in the United Arab Emirates, firearms manufacturer Kalashnikov has exhibited the new AK-19 rifle for the first time outside of Russia. The AK-19 rifle meets NATO’s caliber standards, including a Picatinny rail, improved aperture sight, and collapsible folding stock. The rifle is also chambered for 5.56 x 45mm rounds and traditionally used in Southeast Asia and Latin America. The AK-19 was made with the hopes of wooing the firearms industry, especially in the Middle East.
