Cpl. Jordan Perez, a U.S. Marine, is recognized for his heroic act of saving two civilian kayakers from drowning. The two civilians were kayaking in 21 Area Boat Basin when their vessel suddenly capsized. Specifically, the large, sharp boulders in the basin created strong waves that flipped the kayak, leaving the kayakers struggling in the water. Perez has to swim 250 meters through the choppy waves to reach the kayakers. He was awarded a challenge coin from Brig. Gen. Dan Conley for his bravery.
